Although he regrets leaving Fort Wayne, Carmody said the move will give him the chance to play a role in cutting-edge urban agriculture. “To me it was just an opportunity to do some things I couldn’t pass by,” Carmody said.

Carmody had been with the group for about two years.

Carmody said his biggest accomplishment for Fort Wayne was raising expectations of what a downtown organization should be. He also pointed to the events organized by the group and its small business and property development efforts.

Carmody will lead Detroit’s Eastern Market near downtown, which has a Web site that boasts it “is the largest historic public market district in the United States.”

“I think we’ve got some good momentum built with Harrison Square,” he said. “It’s a good situation for the (DID) board to bring someone into.”

In 2006, with City Council’s support, the district doubled in size and extended its life span another 10 years. The DID, formed in 1995, operates through a combination of government support and a special tax assessed to nonresidential property owners within its boundaries. Its annual budget is about $650,000, about half of which comes from the tax, which also doubled when the district did.

The re-routing of Jefferson and Washington to the south - on the north sideof the RR tracks is the best idea I have heard to make West Central more livable! Hope it flies. John B. Kalb

Good luck Dan. I have been to Detroit several times and this will be a great challenge for you. Hopefully you can help this city get turned around. It is just in a pretty disastrous state right now especially downtown with all the old, barren, dilapidated buildings around.

I just had to point out too that if you look at the shortened version of Karen Goldner's on the main page (on the right)...she is not calling Dan an enormous (you know what). LOL!

You need some sort of "filter" to be added to your blog to take out items like this - funny, funny

LOL. That is funny - I just noticed it. No, I do not think of Dan as anything like that! I guess human editors still have some advantages over software.
