Building the public square
City makes progress on stadium plan, but crucial questions remain.

Highlights:

  • Presents a list of items that address frequently asked questions about the project
  • Discusses subsidies and the effect of Harrison Square on developments north of it
  • Questions market research surrounding the study and effects on traffic in the area
  • Emphasizes need for input from citizenry and the feeling of being involved

One of the statements that stood out in the article was one that seemed to assume that downtown development is based on this project alone. From what I've read and from being at the initial press conference, this idea is incorrect. The Harrison Square project is a beacon for downtown development, providing a case of genuine interest in downtown development that can be pointed to in the future in order to build the cases for future downtown projects. The term gets tossed around a lot, but this is what 'catalyst' means, having a project that starts the ball rolling, if only to prove that downtown development is possible and desirable.

Why downtown?
Instead of just assuming we need it, we should be asking what we want it to be.

Highlights:

  • Discusses whether public or private sectors should determine what a downtown becomes
  • Questions the need for downtown development in light of historical trends amongst cities because of technology and changes in society
