Stadium deal in game of ‘what if’

"It’s not the lack of private investment that bothers him, Rousseau insists. It’s the fact that Fort Wayne already has a baseball stadium, built for $6.3 million – most of it public money – just 14 years ago. If a water park or some other new attraction could be substituted for the stadium, Rousseau said his opposition might change to enthusiastic support."
"In other words, downtown Fort Wayne isn’t so attractive to would-be investors that the city can afford to play “hard ball” – or to pass up a multimillion-dollar offer from a company that has already shown a talent for revitalizing once-blighted urban areas in Atlanta and elsewhere."
