City and County to Study Opportunities for North River Downtown Area
From the release:
"Building on efforts to galvanize downtown development, Mayor Graham Richard and Allen County Commissioner Bill Brown today announced the formation of the North River Downtown Task Force to address the development of land just north of the city center and the St. Marys River. The area encompasses the OmniSource property north of the river and alongside its banks between North Harrison and Clinton streets."
"The North River Downtown study is a complement to the proposed Harrison Square project. With community-based plans guiding the overall downtown process and new financing tools in place, the City anticipates the viability of multiple downtown catalyst projects stimulating even more private investment, both large and small, in the city center. Prior to the recent investment by Fort Wayne Newspapers, downtown Fort Wayne has seen only $2 million in private investment in the last decade."
City could purchase, redevelop OmniSource property

From the article:
"City officials paid $25,000 in January for an option to purchase the 29-acre property for $4.3 million. The option will expire Dec. 31."
"Wendy Stein, of Stein Advertising, and attorney Rick Samek will chair a study group, which will have three to four months to give a recommendation for the property. An aquatic center, water park and ice rinks already have been discussed as possibilities, but Stein and Samek said "it's a clean slate" at this point."
"The task force is expected to have its 25 to 27 members selected by early next week and its first meeting by the end of the month. It will include Fort Wayne and Allen County officials.Public meetings in which residents and developers will be able to present ideas are expected to begin sometime in May."

From the article:
"Mayor Graham Richard and Allen County Commissioner Bill Brown on Thursday announced the formation of a task force to study the possibilities of developing land north of downtown and the St. Mary’s River. The 25-member North River Downtown Task Force will have about 90 days to develop an action plan."
"Richard listed potential possibilities for the land the task force may discuss: an indoor waterpark, IMAX theater or a sports complex with sheets of ice, all ideas previously mentioned as alternatives to a baseball stadium in the Harrison Square project."
"Residents with ideas for the task force may contact the deputy mayor’s office. A list of the task force’s meetings will be released within the new few weeks. All will be open to the public."

This is great to hear about. I remember hearing talk of a youth-sports complex along with a hotel/waterpark being located in the North Core as possibilities during the Blueprint PLUS+ sessions, but the idea seemed to loose momentum after a year or two. But now, it looks like we just might be seeing some of those possibilities as realities in the North Core in the years to come...
Councilman Smith may have his day yet
This sounds pretty dang sweet. Downtown Fort Wayne is looking like an exciting place to be in the future. Let's just hope to God that Kelty doesn't get elected because he'd find a way to send us back to the 80's.
It will be interesting to see who is selected to be on this Task Force.
I hope they choose some independent minded skeptics and do not choose a cadre of elected officials and people who would benefit from the project!

Just wanted to add that I would love to see a waterpark put in that location. This city hasn't been the same since Diamond Jim's shut down!
Also this question is directed to Dan Carmody, as I know he reads this blog often. Dan, I saw the IMAX mention in the article...has there ever been serious consideration of this? Downtown Ft. Wayne would be a GREAT place to put the city's first IMAX theater!

I believe Science Central (which is losing a very excellent executive director) has discussed an IMAX theatre as part of its complex.
I think that would be a great combo.
IMAX theatres are not without concerns. First, there is only a trickle on non-flyover films being produced.
Certainly there is a limit to how many times each of us (for me it was 3) wants to see the flyover format.
I think in time, Hollywood or Bollywood or somebody will use the technology and make more than a handful of interesting films.
Second, until there is more storyline content how many IMAX theatres are needed?
Those built around the Midwest over the past few years have not done nearly as well as those built earlier.
See Cedar Rapids, Davenport for example.
As with baseball I would suggest that an IMAX project will only be as good as the rest of the elements in whatever mixed use development can be thoughtfully assembled.
Science Central - IMAX and what????
That is how I would approach it.
