Less than 24 hours after the Fort Wayne City Council approved a $50 million bond to fund the plan, the Mayor's office announced it would begin knocking down buildings on Thursday to make way for future construction.

The first building to be demolished will be the Belmont Beverage store located on Harrison Street. The property is expected to be used for a hotel and parking garage."

Keep on truckin ahead! I heard that John Kalb will be out there throwing his body in front of the buildings to try to prevent demolition.
I would pay to see that!
Seriously, How can the city get away with this. There is a building, former Mexican restaurant, half standing a block away. This is a serious hazard. If this was not city property, this would not be allowed. This is insane! The WANE story says the last buildings to be torn down will be the ones along Jefferson! This is not only a HUGE safety concern, it's a major eye sore.
THERE IS NO FENCE AROUND THE BUILDING. Anything, person, or child can just climb into this pile of rubbish and get trapped in there. Seriously, this could be a huge tragedy if something were to happen inside this half collapsed structure.
Like I said, If this wasn't a city owned structure, this would NOT be allowed. If your going to tear it down, do this tomorrow! FWFD had their way with Belmont for training, but it's still structurally sound, and looks a heck of a lot better than that half pile of rubble.
At least put up a 6ft chain link fence, to at least keep it safe and "code" friendly, (as in a construction site).
fetchy-
I agree. I thought almost exact same thing when driving past this week.
What I don't understand is, why was it reported that the restaurant was remodeling when the crash occurred? That doesn't make sense. If the legal real estate transaction isn't final, then I agree, at least put up a fence for safety purposes.
Joe & Scott - Fortunately for me, I will be on the operating table at Lutheran Hospital in the AM. No big op - but an "outpatient" one on my right eye ( # 6 on this eye. Otherwise, Joe, you might have been correct! John B. Kalb
joe-- funny..
It's ever too often that people get curious and wonder places they shouldn't be. Fire departments across the country are performing rescues daily from people wondering into construction sites and such. Its just insane what they are doing.
My fire department got the go ahead to partially collapse a house, which was being destroyed for future construction, we had the house partially collapsed to do our confined spaces & structural collapse training. The house was literally flattened within minutes of our completion and rubble was removed within hours after.
This is how it had to be, for safety reasons. And this was in the country, not downtown fort wayne.
I have a few friends at Neighborhood Code. I'll see if there is anything they can do about it.
Good luck tomorrow John with your surgery.
Perhaps Mayor Richard could pull a Mayor Daley and just bulldoze the whole thing over night. Then Fetchy can sleep better at night.
I wish you luck at the doctor tomorrow also, John. I know I give you a hard time on this blog a lot but we disagree about one topic in this world. I'm sure we both agree that you being healthy is a good thing!
Good luck with the surgery, John.
Fetchy,
Greg Leatherman announced today that the restaurant you referred to will be coming down as soon as possible.
They are awaiting an environmental report on the asbestos and then it will come down ahead of schedule and as soon as possible... most likely next week.
scott s., will you have pictures of any of the demolitions?
Full video of the demolition will be up this afternoon.
The city mentioned that the Belmont Beverage building should be completely down by today. While I was there for about 30 minutes, they had nearly a 1/4th of it down already.
Killjoy Kalb,
I share in the posters above in wishing you well with your procedure today. While HS may or may not be the catalyst that I hope it is, you are certainly the catalyst for this debate. Good health to you sir.
