A View To A Kill(er Project)

The City should have a webcam in place by the start of construction for the Harrison Square project. Webcams have become commonplace for sport facility construction projects.

The Indianapolis Colts have a construction webcam for their new facility known as Lucas Oil Stadium. The St. Louis Cardinals had an excellent webcam in operation during the construction of the latest version of Busch Stadium that featured street-level sound and allowed remote operation of the webcam over the Internet.

There are a number of places that a webcam could be placed for the Harrison Square project. The first spot that comes to mind would be in the upper rafters of the Grand Wayne Center. The Grand Wayne is wired throughout with fiber connectivity. It wouldn't be too difficult to string a line up to the top of the large glass windows. The only concern is placement of the camera. Once the hotel is well underway it may be difficult to see the rest of the project.

Another option is placement in an upper floor of the Indiana Hotel. This location's big advantage is its height potential, although Internet connectivity in the upper floors of the structure may be a problem. The federal courthouse could provide an excellent vantage point, but the key word here is federal, and that may be too much red tape to traverse.

The last decent option would be somewhere on the Lincoln National Life Insurance Co building. This location could also provide a good vantage point into the project area and Lincoln has already shown a willingness to cooperate in the project. A steady and available Internet connection would have to be determined.

No matter where a webcam is placed, the basis for inclusion of such a medium is to provide a way for proponents, opponents, skeptics, critics, and peoples of all types of curiosities to keep an eye on the project and to know that things are indeed changing. The opportunity to see change in the built environment and to watch the historic transformation of this area of downtown over the course of construction shouldn't be overlooked.

Scott S.-You might want to be very quiet about the Lucas Oil Stadium in Indy - That boondoggle is overrunning the projected costs to a point approaching the Big Boston Dig - If we end up building a non-needed new stadium in downtown Fort Wayne and it's costs overrun like Lucas, you will see a riot in our town!! Wow John, the point was simply that they had a webcam.

You could place it down at the far end of the Grand Wayne Center. This would place it about where the new condos would be. The only problem with this is when the condos are built, you wouldn't be able to see any more of the project.

I love this idea though. Fort Wayne Newspapers did this, or something like it, when they built their new building. It would be great to see something like this for the HS project.

I hope to see you rallying the troops John. If you lead the riot, I bet I'd see more violence at a middle school dance.

Only you can compare a 15 Billion dollar project to a $500 Million dollar stadium

John,

Lucas Oil stadium is having budget overruns because they did not anticipate that the price of cement would increase do to China. However, HS is being built after the price increase, therefore the price tag is more accurate.

I am not even going to take up the comparison of the "Big Dig" to Lucas Oil Stadium. The comparison is ridiculous. There is a name for that kind of argument but I can't think of it currently.

Would there be a problem with a distant view from the top of One Summit?

I would love to see this also.
