The Parking Game

From the study:

"The downtown currently appears to have an adequate supply of parking. However, there is not a coordinated plan or organizational model for managing the parking inventory, planning for future parking needs or developing well defined goals and objectives for downtown parking. In short, parking needs to be managed as a system whose objectives should compliment the community’s larger strategic vision and economic development priorities."

Temporary Downtown Parking Solutions

"The lot that used to house Belmont Beverage, and several dozen parking spaces, is now nothing more than a pile of dirt. Several more parking lots downtown will be just like that."

"The Harrison Square project will add another parking garage downtown, offering just under 1,000 spaces. Before that can happen, nearly 300 parking spaces will disappear.

While that could cause a parking crunch for venues like the Grand Wayne Center and Botanical Conservatory, they've collaborated with several groups to find a quick fix.

One of the interim solutions is using the Civic Center parking garage, located at Jefferson and Calhoun. The garage offers nearly 1,200 spaces, helping to replace some of those lost because of construction for Harrison Square."

"Construction will start this month on a temporary 200-space parking garage. That's primarily for Lincoln employees. The city says they'll add more way-finding signs to help guide people to open parking spaces."

Group will promote downtown parking options

"Downtown parking long has been a concern for Fort Wayne residents and businesses.

Because of that, downtown venues - such as the Grand Wayne Center, the Embassy Theatre and the Botanical Conservatory, among others - are communicating parking options to the community and venue patrons. Representatives from local organizations met throughout the summer with city and downtown officials to learn about the construction phases of Harrison Square and how they would affect parking and pedestrian traffic."

Pre-emptive measures designed to ease downtown parking crunch

"A map created by the Fort Wayne-Allen County Convention and Visitors Bureau provides detailed information on parking costs and availability for visitors to the Embassy, Allen County Public Library, Foellinger-Freimann Botanical Conservatory, Fort Wayne Philharmonic and others. There’s more parking downtown than many people may realize. The Civic Center parking garage at the corner of Jefferson Boulevard and Calhoun Street, for example, has 1,186 parking spots available for $2 after 5 p.m. and on weekends. Thousands of other spots downtown range from free to less than $10.

To help ease the transition to a downtown under construction, the city plans to install large signage throughout downtown later this year where parking is available."
