Planners favor rezoning to circle Square

"Land northwest of Harrison Square soon could be rezoned to help draw additional restaurants, condos and shops to downtown.

Fort Wayne Plan Commission members on Monday recommended the area bounded by West Washington Boulevard, Fairfield Avenue, Jefferson Boulevard and Webster Street be designated a central downtown district – the same zoning classification as Harrison Square. The land currently is zoned for general commercial use.

The City Council will make the final decision on the rezoning request, which is the first step toward implementing the city’s Around the Square plan. The plan tries to balance efforts to attract downtown businesses to the area surrounding the $125 million revitalization project with the need to preserve historic downtown homes."
