Quote Of The Day

DOWNTOWN IS ALREADY DOING FINE
Journal Gazette, The (Fort Wayne, IN) - September 26, 1998
Author: BEN SMITH THE JOURNAL GAZETTE

"[Downtown]'s also never going to be the heartbeat sort of place we'd all like it to be.

Our chance for that went by the boards a long time ago, when we built Memorial Coliseum out on the 930 Impasse and then added the baseball stadium next door. Put one or both downtown, and it's a different place entirely. It's exactly the place we'd all like it to be.

Nothing is ever that simple, of course, but every sagging metropolis out there seems to consider a new arena the answer to its woes. As a sportswriter I've been to a lot of revitalized downtowns, and every one of them has a sports/convention facility as its common link."
